There are 17 Sustainable development goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations as a part of their 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015. One of these, SDG-14 focuses on ‘Life below water’ with a goal to ‘Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.’ Various brands are becoming environmentally conscious and are taking steps to reduce their damaging impact on the environment. Do you want to know how our favourite sports brands are contributing? Hop on! Nike is taking a stand for climate action through their Move to Zero journey towards a zero carbon, zero waste future. They have signed various agreements like the CEO Water Mandate (2008) and Zero discharge of hazardous chemicals (2011), alongwith Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance (2016), The Global Fashion Agenda’s Circular Fashion System Commitment (2018), etc. The impacts of these commitments look very positive! Keeping pace with its competitor, Puma is also working towards sustainability. It is actively focusing on Joined Microfiber Consortium, recycling plastic bags, reducing Chemical discharge, reducing carbon emission, recycling Polyester and Cotton, using electricity from renewable sources, initiating energy efficiency programs, taking leading roles in UN convened Fashion Charter on Climate Action and Joined Fashion Pacts climate commitment, etc. Also, going one step further, Adidas has taken a pledge on the UN’s Ocean Conference website. Adidas has two strategic priorities- "we value water" and "we innovate materials and solutions''. They are fulfilling these by reducing plastic use in bags, bottles and body care products, resigning some of its products to suit the environment, increasing use of recycled polyester and Better Cotton in its garments, reducing its range by 25% and Eliminating over 2 million product samples through virtual samples. In 2017, Adidas and Parley For The Oceans teamed up to tackle the plastic pollution in oceans. Their cooperation created the Adidas Parley shoes which are sports shoes made out of plastic trash found in the ocean! (You can read about the sustainability commitments of these brands through the links in references) I know what you are wondering- What are our Indian origin Sports brands contributing towards SDGs? Although some of these brands are actively taking baby steps towards this cause, they unfortunately haven't been able to portray their efforts on public platforms like these giant brands. It is high time for our Indian brands and organisations to realize their share towards this sustainable journey. Are you working with the above mentioned brands? Are you their customers? If yes, give yourself a pat on the back. If not, is your own company doing something great for our Oceans? Do let us know in the comments section! And hey, do you yourself want to do something for our Oceans? What are you waiting for? Hop into your sports shoes and join #NamamiTate , because we have a world to save buddy!
