In 2023, the UN is conducting the 7th edition of the Road safety week in which it is going to focus on sustainable transport, in particular the need to shift to walking, cycling and using public transport. Road safety remains a significant global concern. Despite efforts to improve conditions, many regions still face alarming statistics. Each year, millions of lives are lost and countless others are injured due to road accidents. Factors contributing to this issue include reckless driving, speeding, impaired driving, lack of infrastructure, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws. Vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, face heightened risks. Developing countries often bear the brunt of this crisis, with limited resources to address the complex challenges. However, road safety initiatives, technological advancements, and awareness campaigns have yielded positive outcomes in some areas. Governments, organizations, and communities worldwide are striving to enhance road infrastructure, promote safer behavior, and implement effective policies. Emphasizing education, stricter regulations, and sustainable transportation options, such as walking, cycling, and public transport, are vital steps in mitigating road risks. Collaborative efforts between stakeholders, including policymakers, law enforcement agencies, transportation authorities, and the public, are crucial for achieving significant and sustainable progress in global road safety.
