Fisheries play a vital role in global food security and nutrition, providing over 20% of the animal

protein intake for nearly 3 billion people worldwide. World Fisheries Day serves as a platform to

raise awareness about these challenges and promote responsible fisheries management practices

that balance conservation with the needs of fishing communities.

Facts about India’s Fisheries Sector

- With an 8% share in global fish production, India ranks as the world’s third-largest fish

producer, second-largest aquaculture producer, largest shrimp producer, and fourth-largest

seafood exporter.

- Inland fish production, exports, and aquaculture, particularly in inland fisheries, have shown

significant growth, contributing to over 70% of the total fish production.

- The sector has played a vital role in providing sustainable incomes and livelihoods to the 3

crore fishers and fish farmers in the country.
